STANFORD, Calif. - It was a banner day for the UCLA sand volleyball program winning all three divisions at the Stanford Invitational Pairs Tournament on Sunday at the new Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium.
There was an all-Bruin final at the No. 1/2 Division as UCLA's No. 1 doubles pair of Kamila Tan and Zoë Nightingale defeated the Bruins' No. 2 pair of Elise Zappia and Madie Smith, 21-15, 21-15 to win the title.
Nightingale/Tan's journey to the title began with a straight-set quarterfinal win over Washington's No. 1 pair of Kaleigh Nelson/Cassie Strickland, 21-14, 24-22. They then beat Stanford's No. 1 duo of Lauren Birks and Brittany Howard, 11-21, 21-18, 15-8 in the semifinals.
Smith/Zappia posted a comeback win over California's top pair of Sarah Cole and Emily Lunt, 20-22, 21-18, 15-13 in the quarterfinals. They then defeated Saint Mary's top tandem of Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons with another come-from-behind win in the semis, 21-23, 21-10, 15-13.
Earning the title at the No. 3/4 Division without dropping a set was the Bruins' duo at No. 4 doubles, Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye. They opened with a 21-8, 21-17 win over California's No. 3 pair Inanna Eshoo and Katie Ragalia in the quarterfinals. Then "America's Team" beat Washington's No. 4 duo of Courtney Schwan and Bailey Tanner, 21-16, 21-14 in the semifinals. The Bruins' title-clinching win came over Stanford's No. 3 team of Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz, 21-11, 23-21.
UCLA's other entry in the 3/4 division was the No. 3 duo of Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver, which suffered a quarterfinal loss to the No. 3 duo of Washington, Carly DeHoog and Krista Vansant, 22-20, 21-18.
UCLA's No. 5 team of Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt made it a Bruin sweep, winning the No. 5/6 Division. They opened with a 30-28 win over Washington's No. 5 tandem of Justice Magraw and Melanie Wade in the quarterfinals and then defeated California's No. 6 pair of Sabrina Blackwell and Ashley Johnson, 22-20, 21-18 in the semifinals. They finished things off with a comeback win in the finals over Stanford's No. 6 duo of Petra Grutzik and Dana Ritchie, 19-21, 21-16, 21-19.
The other Bruin entry in the 5/6 bracket was UCLA's No. 6 pair of Kendahl Hettick and Anastasia Kunz, which advanced to the semifinals with a 28-17 opening round win over California's No. 5 duo of Allison Leong and Teya Neff. They lost a hard-fought match in the semis to Stanford's Grutzik/Ritchie, 21-19, 21-17.
The Bruins return to action on Wednesday, April 15, when they host No. 6 Long Beach State on "Senior Day" at the Sunset Canyon Sand Volleyball Courts. The festivities will start at 1:00 p.m. and the match will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
