
No. 8 UCLA Captures Bronze with 4-1 Win Over Saint Mary's

HONOLULU - No. 8 UCLA (10-5) ended the regular season on a winning note and completed its first winning campaign in program's young history with a 4-1 victory over Saint Mary's (4-16) to capture bronze on Saturday at the Aloha Invitational at Queen's Beach in Waikiki, Hawaii.
It marked the Bruins' third win over the Gaels in 2015.
UCLA opened with a thrilling three-set win at No. 1 doubles when Kamila Tan and Zoë Nightingale defeated SMC's Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons, 21-15, 18-21, 16-14.
The Bruins then took a 2-0 lead at the No. 2 flight as Elise Zappia and Madie Smith defeated the Gaels' Mary Hernandez and Mileva Popovic in straight sets, 21-10, 21-16.
Saint Mary's closed the gap to 2-1 when its No. 3 doubles team of Madi Wilkerson and Clare Powers defeated the Bruins' Julie Consani and Laurel Weaver in straight sets, 21-19, 21-16.
The Bruins clinched the team win at No. 4 doubles when Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye defeated Hannah Lisera/Maegan Conroy in straight sets, 21-8, 21-14.
At No. 5 doubles, UCLA's Lexi Jasper-Baylin and Ivey Schmitt posted an easy straight-set victory over Nicole Trenka and Nicole Singh, 21-9, 21-11 to provide the 4-1 team final.
While UCLA's team competition is over, the Bruins' No. 1 pair of Nightingale and Tan earned a bid to compete in the Pairs Championship at the 2015 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama, May 1-3.
