Ty Moore Propels #2 UCLA to Series Victory with Walk-Off Single
May 03, 2015 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA left fielder Ty Moore delivered the game-winning walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Bruins to victory over Gonzaga, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA takes the series, 2-1, and remains undefeated in weekend series this season, 11-0.
With Brett Stephens on second base, Kevin Kramer on first base, and one out, Moore connected on a 1-2 pitch to send the Bruins to victory in the final frame. The ball went flying down the right field line past the diving Bulldogs first baseman to cap off a run of five unanswered runs for UCLA.
David Berg (5-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two, to earn the win for UCLA. Gonzaga's David Bigelow (0-4) allowed two runs on four hits in relief to garner the loss.
UCLA reached double-digit hits for the second time in the series, and 22nd time this season, amassing 12 in total. Moore (3-for-5, 2 RBI) led the charge with a team-high three hits. Also finishing with multiple hits were Sean Bouchard (2-for-2, 2B), Kramer (2-for-4, 2B) and Stephens (2-for-4, 3 R, SB).
Gonzaga (21-23) got the scoring started with a run in the top of the second inning to take the early lead on the Bruins. With two outs, Jeffrey Bohling singled and was brought home by the next batter, Tyler Frost, on an RBI-double.
The Bulldogs then went on to score in each of the next three innings, totaling four runs. The stretch was highlighted by a solo home run by Mitchell Gunsolus in the third and a two-run home run by Taylor Jones in the fifth. The only Bruin rebuttal was an RBI-groundout by Moore in the third inning to get UCLA on the board.
Trailing by four, UCLA (33-11) got another one back in the bottom of the fifth in an unconventional manner. With runners on the corners and two away, Moore broke for second on a steal attempt and paused half-way after the throw down to second was made. Simultaneously, Stephens left for home and came into score as Moore kept himself alive in a run-down.
The Bruins then followed that up with a three-run sixth inning to pull even with the Zags. With runners on second and third and one out, Kort Peterson drove in the first run with a sacrifice-fly to left field. Christoph Bono subsequently doubled to deep center field in the next at-bat to bring in the second run of the inning and Trent Chatterton reached on an error by the shortstop to allow the tying run to cross.
The seventh and eighth innings were quiet, leading to a loud and exciting final frame. In the top half, the Bulldogs managed to get a runner to third base, but Berg stranded him there with a perfectly placed breaking ball to strike out Sam Brown and keep the game knotted at five.
Then, in the bottom half, Moore delivered the game-winner. Stephens singled with one out and Kramer walked in the next at-bat to set up Moore with two on in the ninth. The Mission Viejo native did not disappoint with a sharp single down the line to send the Bruins to victory.
UCLA will be back in action on Tuesday, May 5 against the Pepperdine Waves at 6:00pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game can be heard live at uclabruins.com.
