
UCLA Eliminated by Illinois at NCAA Golf Championships

UCLA lost 3-2 in the match play quarterfinals. The Illini advanced to the semifinals where they will play USC, a 4-1 winner over Texas.
UCLA juniors Lorens Chan and Jonathan Garrick accounted for the Bruins' match play victories. Chan beat Dylan Meyer 4 and 2 and Garrick defeated Brian Campbell 1-up. In the other matches, senior Manav Shah lost 1-up to Thomas Detry; junior Jake Knapp lost 4 and 3 to Charlie Danielson and senior Preston Valder lost 1-up to Nick Hardy.
Chan won four straight holes on the back nine to seal his victory. He made three birdies and a par on holes 13-16 to go 4-up before Meyer could recover.
Garrick built a 3-up lead after 10 holes, but Campbell rallied to win four of the next five holes with three pars and two birdies. At the 16th with a 1-up lead, he put his tee shot in the water and Garrick won the hole with a par to square the match. Garrick won the par 5 17th with an eagle for a 1-up lead, and both players bogeyed from the sand at the 18th.
