SPARKS, Nev. – The UCLA cross country team opened the 2015 season under the lights Friday night at the Ninth Annual Nevada Twilight Classic.

The women ran nearly a full squad on the 4k course at Shadow Mountain Park with a few first-timers. Sophomore Roni Yamane paced the team with a 16th place finish in a time of 15:42. Classmate Jessica Cushing-Murray was 19th at 16:10 while senior Kelly Brooks (21st, 16:16) and sophomore Emily Fieberling (22nd, 16:21) followed.

In her first official race for the Bruins Katie Sered finished 25th with a time of 16:38 while her twin sister Gabby Sered in her first race placed 35th in a time of 18:14.

A lot of new faces tackled the 6k course on the men's side for UCLA. Sophomore Sahm Bazargan was third overall with a time of 16:28 and was directly chased by three Bruins. Freshman Cole Smith was fourth at 16:29, sophomore Max Davis finished fifth at 16:31 and Jackson Marshall capped off the pack at sixth in 16:32.

Junior Nolan Dickson was just outside of the Bruin quartet in eighth with a time of 16:43 while sophomore Jon Bazinet (11th, 17:11) and freshman Scott Edwards rounded out the UCLA harriers in 12th with a time of 17:32.

After another week of training in the mountains near Mammoth, UCLA will return to the trail at the Mustang Challenge, held in Santa Clarita on Saturday, Sept. 19.
