The summer amateur season for members of the UCLA women's golf team is in full swing. What started with the Curtis Cup in June has taken a number of Bruins all over the world to England, Iceland, Missouri and here in the Golden State.
Two Bruins have been victorious in individual tournaments so far this summer. Freshman-turning-sophomore Bethany Wu won the 86th Women's TRANS National GA Amateur Championship (July 11-15) at Lake Forest Country Club in Lake St. Louis, Mo. She defeated the field by eight strokes, shooting a 7-under 281 with rounds of 70-74-68-69. Next up for Wu will be the U.S. Women's Amateur (Aug. 1-7) at Rolling Green Golf Club (Springfield, Pa.).
Sophomore-turning-junior Lydia Choi won the 95th Los Angeles City Women's Championship (July 8-10) at Rancho Park. She won by one shot with a 7-over 220. Choi rebounded from an opening-round 78 to fire a 73 and then a 69 to claim her second L.A. City title (2014).
The Bruins' European duo of junior-turning-senior Bronte Law and graduated senior Louise Ridderström have been across the pond since the collegiate season ended. Fresh off a team victory at the Curtis Cup with Great Britain and Ireland, Law helped England to a win at the European Ladies' Team Championship (July 5-9) in Iceland. Law went 5-1 in the match-play portion.
Ridderström was third in the stroke-play portion of the event with a 2-under 142, as Sweden finished fifth in the team portion. Both Law and Ridderström also took part in the Ladies British Amateur (June 21-25) in England, as each advanced to match play and fell in the second round.
Incoming freshmen Mariel Galdiano and Clare Amelia Legaspi both competed in the AJGA Yani Tseng (July 5-8) in Pleasanton, Calif. Galdiano placed third, while Legaspi tied for 36th. Legaspi also played in the U.S. Girls' Junior qualifier on June 20, but lost in a tiebreaker. Newcomer and transfer Joo Seo, from UC Irvine, tied for fourth at the California Women's Championship (July 11-13) in Ojai.
