SEATTLE -- Kari Korver scored 12 points to lead the Bruins, all in the first half, as UCLA lost at Washington for the second straight year after a slow start. The Bruins dropped to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12 after a 64-56 defeat on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Just like last year, the Bruins began the game with cold shooting and careless turnovers, missing their first 16 shots and adding three miscues before ever making a field goal. Washington jumped out to a 14-0 lead after a pair of free throws by Kelsey Plum. Korver made back-to-back three-pointers, the only points for UCLA in the quarter. She was 2-for-5 from the floor while the rest of her teammates went 0-for-16 with every player missing shots but Kelli Hayes, who didn't attempt one. It was the lowest scoring quarter by UCLA this season.
In the second quarter, the Bruins turned up the defensive pressure and cut the lead to just four on a layup by Nirra Fields, capping a 9-3 run by UCLA and making it 19-15 (6:25). Washington pushed the lead back to double digits, but the Bruins closed to within four again by halftime, 30-26, with consecutive three-pointers by Korver, her fourth and Kennedy Burke, her first.
UCLA scored the first four points of the third and finally took its first lead of the game at 37-36 on a jumper in the lane by Jordin Canada at the 5:46 mark. From that point on it was nip and tuck with neither team leading by more than three points. The game was tied at 46-46 heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Talia Walton hit her third three-pointer to give the Huskies a 53-48 lead at the 7:18 mark. They would maintain at least a five-point lead for the remainder of the quarter as UCLA couldn't get stops or defensive rebounds when needed.
Plum finished with 23 points and Walton added 22 for the Huskies. Chantel Osahor scored just two points but hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds for Washington.
Fields was the only other Bruin to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points. She added six rebounds as well, to help UCLA outrebound the Huskies 46-42. Kacy Swain had nine points and nine rebounds but was one of two Bruins to foul out of the contest. Also fouling out was Lajahna Drummer, after scoring a season-high nine points. Canada finished with eight points, a game-high seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.
TIP-INS:
Washington: The Huskies enjoyed a 21-4 advantage in made free throws and a 26-12 disparity in fouls called.
UCLA: Kari Korver has made at least one 3-pointer in 27 straight games ... Canada has had five or more assists in 15 of 16 games this season.
