January 16, 2016 | Gymnastics

Gainesville, Fla. - UCLA gymnasts set six career-high marks and recorded season-high team marks on vault and uneven bars to post a big road score of 196.925. Third-ranked Florida won the meet with a score of 197.675.

The fifth-ranked Bruins (1-1) scored 49+ on all four events and totaled six scores of 9.9 or higher, including a meet-winning 9.95 on beam by Danusia Francis and career-highs of 9.9 on vault by Napualani Hall and on bars by Katelyn Ohashi.

UCLA started the meet on uneven bars and improved upon their season-opening total by over half a point, scoring 49.35. After Francis led off with a 9.825, the Bruins got three-straight career-best marks, with JaNay Honest scoring 9.85, Ohashi scoring 9.9, and Melissa Metcalf earning 9.85. Sophina DeJesus followed with a season-high and team-best 9.925, and Sonya Meraz closed with a 9.8. The Bruins' first-rotation score kept them just .05 behind Florida (2-0) after the Gators scored 49.4 on vault.

The Bruins hit another season-high on vault, 49.125, buoyed by career-high scores of 9.9 by Hall and 9.825 by Madison Preston. Sadiqua Bynum also scored 9.825. Florida, however, increased its lead to 0.45 after scoring 49.525 on bars, led by Bridget Sloan's 9.975.

In rotation three, UCLA had another strong showing on floor exercise, winning the event with a score of 49.375. Hall led off with a 9.8, followed by a 9.825 from Ohashi and a pair of 9.875s by Francis and Hallie Mossett. Angi Cipra and Bynum closed with a pair of 9.9s. Florida did not let up, though, recording six scores of 9.85 or better en route to a 49.45 team total on beam.

The Bruins started strong on beam in the final rotation with a career-best 9.85 leadoff routine by Mikaela Gerber, but momentum was slowed by a few stumbles and Ohashi not being credited for her full start value by one judge. Francis, however, ended the Bruins' competition on a high note, scoring 9.95 for the second-straight week to win the event.

Next up for UCLA is a trip to Arizona to take on the 10th-ranked Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 12pm PT.
