Bruins Off to Strong Start in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. โ Day one of the 2016 ITA Southwest Regional Championships has concluded and the UCLA men's tennis team is off to a hot start.ย Seven of 10 Bruins have advanced to the round of 32 in the singles main draw, including top-seeded Martin Redlicki and second-seeded Gage Brymer.ย ย
In the round of 128, sophomore Reid Shumway fell to UC Irvine's Mason Hansen, 7-5, 6-3.ย Seniors Michael Guzman and Nishanth Yamani also fell in their first-round matches.ย Despite taking the first set, 6-3, Guzman was unable to keep pace with Arizona's Shota Meparidze, as the Wildcat advanced with a three-set win.ย Redlicki, Brymer, Joseph Di Giulio, Austin Rapp, Maxime Cressy, Daniel Gealer, and Ben Goldberg earned first-round byes.
Top-seeded Redlicki registered UCLA's first singles win of the day.ย The Bruin junior dispatched Eric Kenneth of Hawai'i in straight sets in the round of 64.ย Brymer, the tournament's No. 2 seed, defeated Antoine Noel of Cal Poly 6-1, 6-1 to punch his ticket to the round of 32.ย Ninth-seeded Di Giulio coasted past Cal Poly's Axel Damiens, 6-3, 6-1, while No. 10 Rapp outlasted Igor Kolaric of Hawai'i in a tight three setter.ย After taking the first set over Adrian Legarreta in the tiebreaker, Goldberg registered a 6-1 win in the second set to take the match.ย After dropping the first set to UC Irvine's Bruce Man-Son-Hing, Gealer battled back in the second set tiebreaker to force a third.ย The Bruin sophomore advanced with a 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-1 win.ย Rounding out second-round action, Cressy posted a straight-set victory over Marcel Chan of Hawai'i.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
In doubles action, Ben Goldberg and Michael Guzman defeated Justin Cvitanovic and Valentin Lang (Grand Canyon), 8-5, in the round of 64.ย Hawaii's Christopher Cajigan and Eric Kenneth advanced over Gage Brymer and Daniel Gealer in a walkover.ย After first-round byes, third-seeded Redlicki and Cressy and fifth-seeded Di Giulio and Rapp will hit the courts Friday for the round of 32.ย ย ย ย ย ย
The ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete across 85 ITA Regional Championships around the country.
