UCLA Downs Washington in Overtime, 3-2

October 20, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Los Angeles, Calif. โ€“ UCLA freshman Jessie Fleming scored two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Bruins to a 3-2 overtime win over Washington.

UCLA (11-3-1, 5-1-1 in the Pac-12) raced out to a 2-0 lead after seven minutes thanks to goals by Fleming and Amber Munerlyn, and Washington (6-9-1, 1-6-0) answered with two first half goals of their own to tie before Fleming scored the game-winner on a header in the 97th minute.

"One thing with this team is we're super-resilient," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "We keep pushing. We may not play well, but we always keep pushing. But we can't be this Jekyll and Hyde team anymore."

Fleming netted her first goal of the game at the 4:28 mark, taking a cross in the box from Courtney Proctor and one-timing it into the back of the net. A give-and-go between Gabbi Miranda and Anika Rodriguez set up Munerlyn's goal at 6:57 that doubled the lead. The goal was Munerlyn's fourth of the season.

Washington, however, came roaring back with two goals to tie. Kimberly Keever put the Huskies on the scoreboard at 8:17 with a shot to the lower right corner, and Ava Lewis tied it up at 28:50 with a second-effort goal, her first goal of the year.

The game-winner was set up by Zoey Goralski, who sent a long ball into the box for Fleming, who headed it past Washington goalkeeper Kaylyn Smith for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

UCLA had two goals nullified in the game. The Bruins could have been up 3-1 in the 21st minute on a long-distance top-shelf goal by Gabbi Miranda, but the shot was taken just after the referee blew the whistle for a Washington foul. Munerlyn nearly had her second goal of the night in the 57th minute on a beautiful curling shot to the upper right corner, but she was ruled offside. The Bruins also had a close call in the 47th minute when Courtney Proctor pinged the crossbar.

The Bruins will host Washington State on Sunday in the team's final regular season home game. UCLA's seven seniors will be honored in pre-game festivities beginning at 12:45pm. Kickoff is at 1pm. ย
