Seniors Rule in 2-1 Senior Day Win over WSU
October 23, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Los Angeles, Calif. – On Senior Day, UCLA seniors played pivotal roles in the Bruins' 2-1 victory over Washington State, with sixth-year senior Courtney Proctor scoring the first goal in the 18th minute and Gabbi Miranda scoring the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
Proctor's goal came thanks to freshman goalkeeper Teagan Micah, who sent a long pass in to Proctor, who took it to the goal, shooting far post past goalkeeper Ella Dederick. Her shot hit the left post and banked in for her second goal of the season.
Washington State tied the game at 76:17 after Alysha Overland scored in a crowded box, but the Bruins' trademark resilience came through in the clutch. Just 41 seconds later, UCLA reclaimed the lead on Miranda's goal at 76:58. Miranda and Annie Alvarado played a give-and-go that ended with Miranda sending a beautiful goal into the back of the net from the top of the box.
"One of our keys today in the attack was one more pass," UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell said. "There might be a chance you might have, but there's one more pass and someone might have a better shot. And that's exactly what happened with Annie passing it to Gabbi. Senior to senior. It was great; we have a little bit of adversity, we go to overtime or we give up a goal when we have the run of play, but we come right back, and that's the sign of a really good team and a champion."
Each team had good chances in the second half, and each team had potential goals get cleared off the line by the defense. In the 58th minute, Zoey Goralski cleared a shot by Meagan O'Neill off the line after a corner kick, and a minute later, it was Cougar defender Jordan Branch who cleared a shot by Proctor off the line. The scoring opportunities came in a flurry after that. Amber Munerlyn had a good look at goal in the 59th minute, but she shot the ball straight to Dederick, who made the save. In the 60th minute, Proctor had another chance but missed just wide. Micah had a big save in the 64th minute, sprawling to make a fingertip save on a shot by Kaitlyn Johnson. Micah finished with four saves, while Dederick had two.
With the win, UCLA improves its record to 12-3-1, 6-1-1 in the Pac-12. Washington State falls to 6-9-1, 1-7-0. The Bruins will next face Colorado in Boulder on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 2pm.
