UCLA Athletics Within $60 Million of Centennial Campaign Goal

October 27, 2016 | Bruin Athletics

LOS ANGELES - UCLA Athletics has officially surpassed $200 million raised in private donations as part of the University's $4.2 billion Centennial Campaign, leaving the department within $60 million of a goal that will ultimately shape the next 100 years of its intercollegiate athletic programs.ย

The Centennial Campaign, which runs between 2013 and 2019, incorporates UCLA Athletics' established goal of raising $260 million โ€“ one of the most aggressive fundraising efforts in the history of intercollegiate athletics.ย With its sights set on eclipsing $260M in philanthropic support over the next three years, Athletics' primary objective during the Campaign is to create a financially-sustainable future to build upon its standing as the premier intercollegiate athletics program in the nation.

Dedicated to providing the student-athlete with an unparalleled experience both academically and athletically, the Centennial Campaign impacts UCLA Athletics in three distinct ways: student-athlete support through endowments, capital projects that lead to state-of-the-art facilities and the further enhancement of operational support that provides resources for more than 650 UCLA student-athletes.

The result of record giving over the past few years has already netted impactful, tangible results that include extensive facility enhancements, cutting edge fitness and injury prevention systems, full cost of attendance provisions for all scholarship student-athletes, comprehensive nutrition support, mental health support and programming, academic mentoring and tutoring, funding for summer sessions, career development programming and financial literacy training among many other ancillary benefits.ย

"The success of this campaign is critical to the future of UCLA and UCLA Athletics," said Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero. "With more than $200 million in giving, the support we've received thus far has been overwhelming. From the increase in student-athletes making the Director's Honor Roll due to additional investment in academic programs and mentoring to the two newest facilities taking shape on the southwest side of campus, in real time, we are witnessing philanthropy make a lasting impact on the lives of current and future generations of Bruins."

In 2017, athletic department expenses are projected to reach more than $100 million.ย  With no state funding, nearly 97 percent of all total expenses are the direct responsibility of UCLA Athletics.ย  With costs across the board continuing to rise as the landscape of intercollegiate athletics evolves and certain projected revenue streams produce at a rate lower than expected, it is vital for UCLA Athletics to generate revenue through private donations as existing self-controlled revenue streams have now been maximized; namely through the department's shoe and apparel partnership with Under Armour and multimedia rights agreement with WME/IMG.ย

"While we can't thank each donor enough for their contributions to this campaign, we still have a ways to go in eclipsing the $260 million goal ultimately needed for a planned academic center, enhanced endowments and further facility upgrades that will undoubtedly define our future success," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Josh Rebholz.ย "By contributing to UCLA Athletics with tax-deductible philanthropic donations, the department's goal of elevating the student-athlete experience to a level that is second-to-none ultimately becomes more than just an aspiration โ€“ it becomes a reality."

During the first four years of the UCLA Centennial Campaign, the Wooden Athletic Fund has received record annual donations each year and has, for the first time, surpassed 8,000 donors with the recent completion of the 8CLAP8K Campaign to expand WAF membership.ย With levels of annual giving that range from $100 to more than $50,000 annually, all UCLA alumni, fans and friends have the ability to help champion UCLA student-athletes and lend valuable support to UCLA Athletics.ย
