Shibahara Advances to Final at Riviera
October 08, 2016 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES - Freshman women's tennis player Ena Shibahara is one win away from becoming just the secondย UCLA player to claim a singles title at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, as she was a straight-set winner in Saturday's semifinals at the Riviera Country Club.
Shibahara, who started the ITA All-American in the pre-qualifying draw and has now won 10-straight matches at Riviera, downed Vanderbilt's Astra Sharma, 6-3, 6-1 in their semifinal encounter. Next up is a showdown with Ohio State's Francesca Di Lorenzo in Sunday's final at 11:00 a.m. Di Lorenzo is seeded No. 3 and upset top-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina, 7-6(3), 6-2 on Saturday.
Shibahara is looking to become just the second UCLA player to claim the singles title in the event's 34-year history. The only Bruin to win a singles title at Riviera was Robin Anderson in 2014. It was an all-Bruin final that year, as Anderson beat teammate Chanelle Van Nguyen, 6-0, 6-2.
There is no cost for admission to watch Sunday's final. For more information on the event, please visit the Riviera/ITA All-American page located HERE.
