PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The Bruins, who opened the Cypress Point Classic as the #7-seed out of eight teams, ended up in third place following a victory versus Stanford on Tuesday at the Cypress Point Club. UCLA outscored the host team 16-8 in singles play.
Following Monday's four-ball and foursomes, Tuesday's format saw each team compete in singles match play with six players. Four points were available for each match, with one point awarded for both the front-nine and back-nine matches, and two points for the overall match. Each match was played over 18 holes.
A pair of Bruins, sophomores Matt Hutchins and Patrick Murphy, won all four potential points, defeating Brad Knox and Franklin Huang, respectively. Sophomore Cole Madey, going up against the top-ranked amateur in the WAGR rankings, Maverick McNealy, won a point for the front-nine and two for the overall match, halving the back-nine to post 3.5 points. Junior Tyler Collier earned the Bruins an additional three points. After dropping the front-nine to Viraat Badhwar, Collier claimed the back-nine and the overall match. Freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara picked up one point (front-nine) versus Jeff Swegle, while freshman Spencer Soosman recorded a half-point (back-nine) against Brandon Wu.
The Bruins, who defeated #9 Stanford and #10 Wake Forest, as well as tying #12 USC, in this Ryder Cup style tournament, go back to the Bay Area next week, hosting the Gifford Collegiate at Silverado Country Club North in Napa.
