NAPA, Calif. - The Bruins wrap up their fall schedule hosting the Gifford Collegiate at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course. The tournament runs from Monday through Wednesday on the par-72, 7,171-yard layout which hosted October's PGA TOUR Safeway Open.
The Gifford Collegiate, which in the past had featured 54 holes of stroke play, will be played under a new format this year. The eight-team field will play 36 holes of stroke play on Monday to seed into Tuesday and Wednesday's match play. Tuesday will feature the match play quarterfinals in the morning and the match play semifinals/consolation in the afternoon, followed by the Wednesday championship and consolation bracket matches. Each team will play three match-play contests.
Joining the Bruins in Napa will be #9 Stanford, #12 USC, #20 Colorado, #37 Northwestern, Washington, South Florida and Wisconsin (rankings based on Golfweek rankings as of Oct. 30).
During Monday's stroke play, all nine Bruins will tee it up. The scoring sixsome (top five scores count) will be junior Tyler Collier, sophomores Matt Hutchins, Cole Madey and Patrick Murphy and freshmen Spencer Soosman and Hidetoshi Yoshihara. Those same six will also play in Tuesday and Wednesday's match play. Sophomore Phil Delisi and freshmen Harrison Mahon and Scott Mitchell will be playing as individuals on Monday. Live scoring and pairings for Monday's action will be available here.
The Bruins are making their second trip to the Bay Area in as many weeks. UCLA finished third at last week's Cypress Point Classic (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). The unique Ryder Cup style format featured four-ball and foursomes play on day one and singles play on day two. The Bruins, seeded seventh, upset #2-seed Wake Forest 7.5-4.5 in day one four-ball and tied #3-seed USC (6-6) in day one foursomes, but lost in a tiebreaker. In the third-place match, UCLA knocked off #1-seed and host Stanford 16-8 in singles play. Hutchins and Murphy won all four potential points in singles play, Madey claimed 3.5 points and Collier picked up three points.
The Gifford Collegiate will be the fourth and final tournament of the fall for the Bruins, who placed third at the season-opening Marquette Intercollegiate (Oct. 2-3, +5, 845) and 14th at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (Oct. 21-23, +25, 889). Hutchins was the top finisher at the Marquette Intercollegiate with a T-3 (-2, 208) finish, while Collier (T-5, -1, 209) and Madey (T-10, +1, 211) also had top 10 showings. In Georgia, Soosman was UCLA's top scorer (+2, 218), finishing in a tie for 29th.
In the 11 previous years of the Gifford Collegiate, the Bruins have won five times (2005, 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2014). James Lee (2007) and Patrick Cantlay (2010) have each won individual honors at the Gifford.
