UCLA Continues Strong Postseason at West Regionals

SACRAMENTO, Calif. โ The UCLA cross country team continued its 2016 success on Friday at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The men's squad placed third overall while the women finished sixth at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
The men posted their best finish at the regional championship since 2012. All season long senior Ferdinand Edman paced the squad and that did not change on the 10k course on Friday. Edman placed fifth overall with a time of 29:47.9.
Jonah Diaz continued his stellar senior campaign with a 14th place finish. Diaz clocked a 29:57.2 and was followed by fellow senior Austin O'Neil in 26th with a time of 30:10.1. Freshman Colin Burke was 31st overall with a 30:16.4 and junior Daniel De La Torre was the UCLA fifth in 37th at 30:27.1.
Rounding out the Bruin effort was sophomore Jackson Marshall in 44th in a time of 30:35.4 and freshman George Gleason in 59th at 30:48.4.
The women posted their second-best finish since 2006 as the Bruins placed sixth overall. Sophomore Carolina Johnson paced the Bruins on the 6k course as she clocked a 20:07.5 to finish 21st. Freshman Claire Markey, running through injury, gutted out a 30th place finish with a time of 20:20.7.ย
Following closely behind Markey was sophomore Julia Rizk, who placed 33rd with a time of 20:24.2. Freshman Cassie Durgy was 52nd at 20:43.7 while junior Roni Yamane was the UCLA fifth runner at 59th in 20:55.7.ย
Freshman Jackie Garner was 61st in a time of 21:00.2 while junior Emily Scharmann came back from injury to finish 77th with a time of 21:16.6.ย
UCLA will await official word from the NCAA for selection to the NCAA Championships. The meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.ย
