AUSTIN, Texas - Senior defender Michael Amick has been named to the 2016 Academic All-America first team as selected by the College Sports Information directors of America (CoSIDA), announced the organization on Tuesday.
Amick, a biochemistry major, is now a two-time Academic All-American as he earned third team honors last season. He is the first Bruin since Joe Sofia in 2013 to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America first team honors and just the second UCLA player to earned Academic All-America honors in back-to-back seasons (Joe Sofia, 2012-13).
The senior from Sunnyvale, Calif. earned his second consecutive academic all-district nod earlier this season after posting a 3.63 GPA in biochemistry. He is a three-time All-Pac-12 selection and was a third team NSCAA All-American honoree and first team NSCAA All-Far West selection in 2014. The three-time team captain was also a nominee for the Senior CLASS Award and is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree. This season, Amick started in 12 matches for the Bruins, including playing every minute of UCLA's first 11 matches, all on the backline.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.30 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
