UCLA Downs Georgia, Faces Texas A&M

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rallied back from a 3-2 deficit to top 11th-ranked Georgia in the first round of the 2016 ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship on Friday. With the win, the Bruins advance to play third-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday at 9 a.m. PT.
“I was really proud of the guys—that doubles point ended up being huge,” said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. “Mackie [McDonald] and Martin [Redlicki] came through for us in the end. The big turnaround was on court 3. Martin got his first serve going and got a little more aggressive. Luckily he held on in the third to win the match.”
UCLA took an early 1-0 lead over Georgia after Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp clinched the doubles point on court 3 with a 6-3 win over Wayne Montgomery and Emil Reinberg.
In singles play, Karue Sell put another Bruin point on the board when he dispatched No. 75 Paul Oosterbaan in straight sets on court 4. The Bulldogs answered back with two points of their own, taking matches on courts 2 and 6. No. 40 Austin Smith downed No. 80 Brymer in straights while Rapp fell in a three setter to Nick Wood. Reinberg gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the match when he edged Logan Staggs, 6-4, 7-5, on court 5.
The deciding points came down to courts 1 and 3. After dropping the first set, No. 37 Martin Redlicki rallied to force a third on court 3. Redlicki edged Georgia's Jan Zielinski 6-4 in the third to tie the match at 3-3. The fate of the Bruins was now in the hands of No. 34 Mackenzie McDonald on court 1.
Although McDonald dropped the first set to 22nd-ranked Montgomery, 5-7, the UCLA junior coasted past his opponent in the second and third sets to take the match and give the Bruins a 4-3 advantage.
