#15 UCLA Dismantles Cal Poly, 19-0
February 28, 2016 | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The No. 15 UCLA Bruins dominated the Cal Poly Mustangs, 19-0, in a shutout victory on Saturday evening at Baggett Stadium. The win clinches the series victory for UCLA.
The Bruins racked up 19 runs on 18 hits, scoring their most runs in a game since March 19, 2010, when they beat Oral Roberts 20-4. The 19-run margin is also the largest margin of victory for UCLA since February 26, 2008 when they defeated CSUN, 22-2.
All nine starters recorded a hit, led by Scott Jarvis (5-for-5, 4 R, 3 RBI, BB) who got on base in all six plate appearances in his first collegiate start. Eric Filia (3-for-6, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 2 RBI) finished a home run short of the cycle and Brett Urabe (3-for-6, 3B, R, 4 RBI) drove in a career and team-high four runs to assist the offensive effort.
Griffin Canning (1-0) was spectacular on the mound, striking out a career-high tying nine batters over a career-high seven scoreless innings to earn the win for UCLA. Cal Poly starter Slater Lee (1-1) got the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits over four innings of work.
For the second night in a row, UCLA (3-3) took a three-run lead in the top of the second to get the scoring started. After two runners reached, Jarvis delivered his first career hit with a one-out RBI-single up the middle to score Kort Peterson. Then, with two outs, Trent Chatterton ripped a double inside of third base to plate a pair and give the Bruins an early, 3-0, edge.
The Bruins tacked on two more in the third inning on a triple from Christoph Bono. With two on and two outs, Bono launched an 0-2 pitch deep into the right center field gap to plate Filia and Peterson and give UCLA a five-run advantage.
UCLA extended their lead to eight in the next frame behind another two-RBI triple. This time it was Filia with the three-bagger on a hard drive to the gap in left center to bring in two runs. The Bruin right fielder then came home on a groundout one batter later to give UCLA the 8-0 lead through four.<?p>
Cal Poly (5-2) could never quell the Bruin bats as UCLA went on to add three in the seventh, five in the eighth and three in the ninth, highlighted by a Brett Urabe bases clearing triple, to reach the final count of 19-0.
The Bruins and Mustangs will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:00pm PT. Fans can listen to all of the action live at uclabruins.com.
