HENDERSON, Nev. – The sixth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over UNLV on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Bruins improve to 12-2 on the season.
Due to 30 mph winds, the match was moved indoors and action kicked off with singles. The Bruins took four of six first sets to dictate the pace of the match. Ninth-ranked Mackenzie McDonald registered UCLA's first point when he downed Jakob Amilon, 6-1, 6-3, at the top of the lineup. Logan Staggs quickly followed suit with his own straight-set win on court 4.
On court 5, Joseph Di Giulio cruised past Evaldo Neto in straights to extend the Bruins' lead to 3-0. No. 49 Martin Redlicki delivered the knock-out punch on court 2 when he dispatched Ruben Alberts, 6-4, 6-2.
The remaining singles matches played out—each going to a third set. After dropping the first set, No. 41 Gage Brymer battled back to force a super tiebreaker. The Bruin junior coasted to a win, taking the tiebreaker 10-3. To close out singles, UNLV's Richard Solberg tallied the Rebels' lone point when he edged Austin Rapp 11-9 in the super tiebreaker.
The Bruins swept doubles play, clinching the point on courts 1 and 3. The fourth-ranked duo of McDonald and Redlicki eased past Alberts and Amilon, 6-1, while Brymer and Rapp downed Alexandr Cozbinov and Charlie Croxford, 6-3. On court 2, Cressy and Di Giulio edged Adam Gage-Brown and Neto 7-5 in the tiebreak to take the set.
Next up, the Bruins travel to the Pacific Northwest where they begin conference play. UCLA faces No. 26 Oregon on Friday at 5 p.m. PT, followed by No. 39 Washington on Sunday at noon. Be sure to follow the Bruins on their road trip as they take over the ITA Instagram account on Wednesday, Mar. 23.
