UCLA Rallies to Defeat Oregon 4-3

March 26, 2016 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Rallying from a 3-1 deficit, the No. 32 UCLA women's tennis team edged No. 35 Oregon, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.  Freshman Alaina Miller clinched the match for the Bruins on court 4 in a tight three setter.  With the win, the Bruins improve to 11-4 on the season and 3-1 in Pac-12 play.

The Ducks came out strong in doubles play, clinching the point on courts 2 and 3.  Laura Luca and Kristin Wiley were unable to keep pace with Oregon's Marlou Kluiving and Christi Woodson as they fell 6-1 at the bottom of the lineup.  On court 1, the seventh-ranked duo of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips responded for the Bruins, edging No. 35 Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan, 6-4.  Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller made a comeback attempt after trailing two games on court 2, but the Ducks' Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita held on for the 6-4 win.

In singles play, both teams took three first sets apiece—Harrison, Fleming, and Miller cruised past their Duck opponents, while McPhillips, Wiley, and Luca fell to theirs.  Oregon struck first on court 6 as Daniela Nasser downed Luca in straights.  No. 18 Harrison quickly responded for UCLA at the top of the lineup, dispatching No. 70 Johnson, 6-2, 6-2.  The Bruins trailed the Ducks 2-1.

Oregon's Kluiving inched the Ducks closer to victory when she defeated Wiley in straight sets on court 5 to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

Keeping the Bruins alive on court 2, McPhillips rallied 6-1 in the second to force a third.  In the final set, McPhillips jumped out to a 4-1 lead over No. 124 Tobita and never looked back.  McPhillips took the match in three sets to cut the deficit to 3-2.

On court 3, Fleming gave up a 5-3 lead in the second as Sangwan knotted the score at 5-5.  Fleming held on for the win in two hard-fought games to even the score at 3-3.  The deciding point would come from the back courts.

After dropping the first set to Miller, Oregon's Rose battled back to force a third.  Trailing 3-4 in the final set, Miller broke Rose's serve to even the score and then held to take a 5-4 lead.  The Bruin newcomer cruised past her Duck opponent in the final game to take the match and clinch for UCLA.

Next up, UCLA hits the road to face Colorado and No. 65 Utah.  The Bruins take on the Buffaloes at 12:30 pm PDT on Apr. 1, followed by the Utes at 11 am PDT on Apr. 3.
