LOS ANGELES - The 13th-ranked Bruins split a doubleheader on Friday on day one of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium, falling to #12 Florida State, 3-0, before defeating UC Santa Barbara, 3-2.
Against Florida State (14-3), the Bruins (9-8) were held hitless until the seventh inning when junior Delaney Spaulding led off with a double down the left-field line for UCLA's lone base knock of the game. Sophomore Johanna Grauer (3-6) suffered the tough-luck loss, striking out two in a complete-game effort and allowing three runs (two earned), nine hits and two walks.
Florida State got on the board in the second on an unearned run coming home on a UCLA error with two outs. In the fourth, a pinch-hit, RBI single by Victoria East made it 2-0, and in the seventh, Sydney Broderick posted an RBI hit to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Bruins' best chance came in the seventh. Following Spaulding's double, sophomore Kylee Perez was hit by a pitch, and two outs later, freshman Paige Halstead was plunked to load the bases. Junior Gabrielle Maurice then sent a deep fly ball to left, but FSU's Korina Rosario made a running catch just inches before slamming into the wall to prevent a possible bases-clearing scenario and end the game.
In the nightcap against the Gauchos (9-8), UCLA (10-8) spotted the visitors a pair of runs in the first before scoring three in the third and holding on for the win. Sophomore Selina Ta'amilo picked up the victory to move to 7-2, striking out six and giving up two runs, seven hits and one walk in a complete-game showing. She had 1-2-3 innings in the third and sixth. Offensively, the Bruins were held to three hits, all in the three-run third.
UC Santa Barbara tallied an RBI double by Arianna Palomares and an RBI single from Jessica Johnston in the first inning to take the early lead.
The Bruins finally broke through in the third. Freshman Zoe Shaw led off with a single, and one out later, stole second. Senior Allexis Bennett then walked and a single through the right side from Spaulding plated Shaw to make it 2-1 Gauchos. After Spaulding swiped second, Perez launched one off the wall in center field to plate Bennett and Spaulding and put the Bruins up 3-2.
The Bruins continue the Winsberg Tournament on Saturday against Charleston Southern (1 p.m.) and Syracuse (3:30 p.m.). Live stats will be available for both games at UCLABruins.com.
