UCLA Loses High-Scoring Game to UW
April 17, 2016 | Baseball
SEATTLE, Wash. – The UCLA Bruins led for much of the afternoon, but fell to the Washington Huskies, 8-7, on Saturday at Husky Ballpark. Each team has now won a game in the weekend series.
The Bruins racked up eight hits in the loss, led by Luke Persico (3-for-5, 2B, R, 3 RBI) who had three hits and drove in three runs. Trent Chatterton (1-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) also drove in a trio of runs.
Reliever Tucker Forbes (1-1) received the loss after allowing three runs while walking four over his 0.1 inning out of the bullpen. Washington reliever Spencer Jones (2-2) got the win and Troy Rallings (8) got the save after they combined to throw three scoreless frames.
Washington (18-12, 8-6) scored the game's first run on a display of creative base running to take an early one-run lead. With runners on the corners and two outs in the second inning, the runner from first broke to second. As Grant Dyer turned to throw to second the runner from third dashed home and scored before Chatterton could relay a throw to the plate.
UCLA (15-17, 6-8) bounced back immediately in the next inning, putting up six runs to grab the lead from the Huskies. Five Bruins reached via walk or hit by pitch in the frame and the first run was brought in when Eric Filia drew a bases loaded free-pass. Persico then plated two runs on a double to right and Chatterton cashed in three more on a bases clearing double, three batters later, to give the Bruins a, 6-1, lead.
That five-run cushion didn't last long as the Huskies pulled back within two in the bottom half of the third. With two on, Joey Morgan hit a home run to left field to make it a 6-4 game.
The two teams then traded runs in the fourth as Persico drove in his third run with a single and Washington earned a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 7-5. The Huskies threatened for more, but Scott Burke got out of a one-out, bases loaded jam to preserve the two-run edge for UCLA.
That lead would hold until the seventh inning when the Bruins gave the lead away. UCLA walked five batters in the inning, including three with the bases loaded to give the Huskies an 8-7 advantage that would eventually become the final count.
The last game of the series will be tomorrow at 1:00pm PT at Husky Ballpark. Fans can listen to all of the action live on uclabruins.com, or watch via live stream on gohuskies.com.
