UCLA Drops Series Finale at Washington

April 18, 2016 | Baseball

SEATTLE, Wash. – The UCLA Bruins dropped the final game of their weekend series with the Washington Huskies, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. The loss secures the, 2-1, series win for Washington.

Kyle Molnar (2-4) got the loss for UCLA, allowing four runs on three hits in five innings of work. The freshman struck out six, but walked four in the defeat. Earning the win for the Huskies was Spencer Jones (3-2) who allowed just one run on one hit in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. Troy Rallings (9) allowed one run, but earned the three-inning save.

The Bruins totaled six hits, led by Eric Filia (2-for-4, R, RBI) who was the only UCLA player with double digit hits. Brett Urabe (1-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in a pair of runs to lead the Bruins in that category.

UCLA (15-18, 6-9) struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning to grab the opening lead. With runners on second and third and two away, Urabe roped a single to center to push both runners across and deliver the Bruins a, 2-0, advantage.

Washington (19-12, 9-6) punched back in the fourth with a grand slam from Chris Baker to take a two-run lead of its own. Following a two-out walk and a hit by pitch to load the bases, Baker took Molnar deep over the left field fence to make it a 4-2 game.

Filia brought the Bruins back within one in the next inning with a two out RBI-single up the middle, but that would be answered with a Joey Morgan RBI-double in the seventh to maintain the Huskies' two-run edge.

UCLA pulled back within one in the eighth when Sean Bouchard launched a double deep to right center. Filia trotted all the way around from first to bring in the run as the Bruins made the score, 5-4.

However, the Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom half to extend their lead to three and reach the eventual final count of 7-4.

The Bruins now travel to Malibu to take on the Pepperdine Waves on Tuesday, April 19 at 3:00pm PT. The game can be heard live on uclabruins.com.

Notes: Eric Filia has reached base in 32 of 33 games this season…Kort Peterson, Sean Bouchard, Eric Filia, Brett Urabe and Luke Persico each had three hits on the weekend to lead the team…Baker's grand slam was the first allowed by UCLA since 2008…This is UCLA's first series loss to Washington since 2006.
