UCLA Concludes Day One in San Diego

The No. 20 UCLA women's rowing team recorded one second-place finish and three third-place finishes in four morning races on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday.
Rowing in Mission Bay, the Bruins' varsity eight took to the water just before 9 a.m., posting a third-place finish in its heat. UCLA posted a time of 6:41.444, less than one half-second behind second-place Texas (6:41.140) and just behind first-place USC (6:36.354). The Bruins' crew finished ahead of San Diego (6:43.624) and the University of Victoria (6:48.706), respectively.
UCLA's varsity four finished second in its five-boat heat, recording a final time of 7:44.344. The Bruins crossed the finish line 9.14 seconds behind first-place Texas, which posted a time of 7:35.204. UCLA finished well ahead of third-place Kansas State (8:15.496), which was followed by Saint Mary's (8:17.710) and San Diego State (8:21.786).
The Bruins' second varsity eight posted a time of 6:58.164, finishing in third place in its heat. Texas (6:50.498) crossed the finish line first, followed by second-place Gonzaga (6:55.836). UCLA was followed by Kansas State (7:13.456), Miami (7:19.462), Saint Mary's (7:39.400) and Humboldt State (7:49.460).
In UCLA's final race of the morning, the novice eight crew recorded a third-place finish with a time of 7:31.509. Texas won the heat, crossing the finish line in 7:11.874, while Washington State (7:25.683) posted a second-place finish. The Bruins finished ahead of Minnesota (7:33.472), San Diego (7:49.507), UC San Diego (8:12.350) and Santa Clara (8:44.299).
The Bruins will race on Sunday morning on Mission Bay, starting with the second varsity eight in a Petite Final at 8:24 a.m. UCLA's varsity eight will race in the Grand Final at 10:00 a.m. The Bruins' varsity eight will race in a "B final" race at 11:52 a.m.
