Bruins Drop Game Two to Cal

April 03, 2016 | Baseball

BERKELEY, Calif. – The UCLA Bruins fell to the No. 10 Cal Golden Bears, 8-2, in game two of the weekend series on Saturday evening at Evans Diamond. The loss seals the series win for Cal.

The Bruin offense racked up eight hits on the night, led by Sean Bouchard (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) who totaled a team-high tying two hits. Eric Filia (1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI, BB) also drove in a run and reached base twice in the game.

Grant Dyer (1-2) got the loss for the Bruins, allowing a career-high eight runs on a career-high 10 hits in 6.1 innings. Cal starter Jeff Bain (3-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on eight hits in his 6.1 innings of work.

UCLA (12-12, 4-4) got the offense going early, putting up two runs in the opening frame. After Brett Urabe led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout, Filia and Bouchard laced back-to-back doubles to the left center gap to put the Bruins up, 2-0.

Cal (17-6, 6-2) came right back, however, with a big first inning of its own to snatch the lead away from UCLA. Three consecutive one-out singles got the scoring started for the Golden Bears. Then, with two on, Brenden Farney belted a three-run home run to left field to put Cal up, 4-2, after one.

Another home run added to the Golden Bear lead in the third, as Mitchell Kranson hit a solo home run to right field to put Cal up by three. Nick Halamandaris drove in another run with an RBI-double down the right field line and the Golden Bears led, 6-2.

Cal continued to use the long ball, getting another two runs on Farney's second home run of the game in the fifth to extend its lead to six over UCLA. That would mark the end of the scoring on the night, netting Cal an 8-2 victory.

The final game of the series begins tomorrow at 1:00pm PT at Evans Diamond. Fans can listen to all of the action live on uclabruins.com.

Notes: Eric Filia has now reached base in all 24 games this season…Filia has gone 68 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout…Sean Bouchard has recorded multiple hits in eight of his last 10 games…Bouchard has driven in 19 runs in his last 13 games…Daniel Rosica recorded a career-high two hits…Trent Chatterton has reached base in 10 consecutive games…Grant Dyer allowed career-highs in hits (10) and runs (8)…This marks the first series loss for UCLA to Cal since 2009.
