Six Bruins Earn Pac-12 Academic Honors

Six Bruin gymnasts earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2016 - second-team honorees Angi Cipra, Danusia Francis, Mikaela Gerber and Sonya Meraz and honorable mention selections Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Melissa Metcalf.
Cipra, a junior from Mesa, Arizona, holds a 3.52 cumulative GPA in Economics. This is the second consecutive season she has earned second-team academic honors. Cipra is a second-team regular season All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 selection on floor and has posted career-highs of 9.975 on floor exercise and 9.85 on balance beam this season.
Francis, a senior from Kenilworth, England, also repeats as a second-team selection. The Pac-12 balance beam co-champion was also an honorable mention honoree as a sophomore. An English major with a 3.48 GPA, Francis was a NACGC/W Scholastic All-American in 2013 and a five-time All-American. She is just the second Bruin ever to score multiple perfect 10s on balance beam, achieving this in 2014 and 2016. Over four seasons, she has hit 127 of 129 routines without a fall.
Gerber, a junior from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada, is majoring in Psychology and holds a 3.62 cumulative GPA. She has competed in every meet for the Bruins this season, hitting all 17 routines. The Bruins' valuable leadoff worker, she leads the team in points scored on beam with 117.950 points. She has scored a career-highs on beam (9.925) and floor (9.85) this season.
Meraz, a sophomore from Santa Monica, Calif., has a 3.44 GPA in Biochemistry. Meraz leads the Bruins in routines competed (36) and points scored (350.95). She has earned career-best marks on vault (9.85), bars (9.85), beam (9.9) and all-around (39.4) this season.
Lee, a redshirt junior, was named to the honorable mention team for the second consecutive year, while Metcalf, a sophomore, was honored for the first time.
To be eligible for selection to an All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and have participated in at least fifty percent of competitions this regular season.
