UCLA Falls in Extra Innings to UCI
May 07, 2016 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins fell in extra innings, 4-2, to the UC Irvine Anteaters in game one of the series on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UC Irvine scored two runs in the top of the 10th to sink the Bruins.
Moises Ceja (2-1) got the loss for UCLA, allowing two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Ben Ritchey (2-2) received the win for the Anteaters for his 1.1 shutout innings and Calvin Faucher (8) got the save with a scoreless 10th.
The Bruins racked up seven hits on the evening, led by Brett Urabe (2-for-5, R, RBI) and Luke Persico (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) who each finished with two.
UCLA (21-22) jumped out to the early lead, plating a run in the first inning to go ahead of the Anteaters. Urabe singled, Eric Filia reached on an error and Persico singled in consecutive at-bats to begin the game and give the Bruins a, 1-0, lead.
UC Irvine (26-17) came back with two runs in the third to take the lead from UCLA. A one-out double from John Brontsema pushed two Anteaters across and lifted UCI to the one-run advantage.
Each starting pitcher then proceeded to curb the offense after that point until the Bruins tied it up in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on third, Urabe drove in the run with a ground out to short to even the count at two runs apiece.
Urabe then had a chance to win it for UCLA in the bottom of the ninth. However, with a man on third and two outs, the Bruin second baseman was set down on strikes to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
In the 10th inning, UC Irvine loaded the bases with two outs for Adam Alcantara. Just one out away from getting out of the jam, Ceja allowed a two-run single to left field which sealed the, 4-2, loss for UCLA.
Game two between UCLA and UC Irvine begins tomorrow at 2:00pm PT at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine. Fans can listen to all of the action live on uclabruins.com.
