June 26, 2016 | Gymnastics
Incoming freshman Madison Kocian placed fifth overall at the P&G Championships and earned an automatic berth to the USA Olympic Trials July 8-10 in San Jose, Calif.
Kocian defied the notion that she is just an uneven bars specialist, putting together two strong all-around performances with a two-day total of 116.450. She scored 58.150 on Day 1 and improved her score on Day 2 with a 58.300.
The World and U.S. uneven bars champion in 2015 scored a meet-high-tying 15.7 on Day 2 of the competition after totaling 15.45 on Day 2. Her combined event score gave her a total of 31.15, good for second place on the event.
She also posted solid marks on balance beam (14.4 on Day 1, 14.25 on Day 2) and floor exercise (14.5 on Day 1, 14.6 on Day 2). Kocian also competed on vault, sticking a Yurchenko layout full on Day 1 for a 13.8 and scoring 13.75 on Day 2. Coming off an ankle injury that had her on crutches earlier in the year, Kocian is planning to upgrade her vault at Olympic Trials.
