TEMPE, Ariz. – The 2017 ITA Kick-Off Weekend draft took place on Wednesday and Thursday. The UCLA men's tennis team will play host to Boise State, Lamar, and New Mexico at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Center, while the women's team heads to Georgia Tech with Kentucky and Penn.
ITA Kick-Off Weekend (Jan. 27-29) serves as a qualifying event for the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which take place in February. Yale University will host the women's championships, to be held Feb. 10-13, while the University of Virginia will host the men's championships, Feb. 17-20, at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
At the 2016 National Team Indoor Championships, the ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rallied from a 3-2 deficit to top 11th-ranked Georgia in the first round. The Bruins then ousted third-ranked Texas A&M, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. UCLA's run for the title was cut short when it fell in the semifinals to No. 7 North Carolina, who went on to defeat top-ranked Virginia in the championship match.
On the women's side, the ninth-ranked Bruins fell to No. 54 Fresno State in a 4-3 heartbreaker in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Indoor Qualifier at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruin men will face New Mexico in their first-round match on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. PT, while the women square off with Kentucky on Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. PT. For updates on UCLA tennis, follow the teams on Twitter at @UCLATennis and @UCLAWTennis.
