UCLA Downs Beijing Normal, 7-0

August 22, 2016 | Women's Soccer

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA continued its offensive onslaught early in the 2016 season, posting a 7-0 exhibition victory over Beijing Normal University at Marshall Field at Drake Stadium. The Bruins were coming off a five-goal explosion in the season opener at San Diego State on Friday and equaled that total after 52 minutes of play on Monday. UCLA, which led 2-0 at the half, scored its five second-half goals in the first 20 minutes of the period.

Sophomore forward Julia Hernandez recorded two goals and an assist in just 34 minutes of play, and senior midfielder Lauren Kaskie contributed three assists. Darian Jenkins, Annie Alvarado and Anika Rodriguez each contributed one goal and one assist.

Amber Munerlyn got UCLA on the board at the 18:10 mark, lofting a shot over the head of BNU goalkeeper Qi Jiamin. Jenkins and Jacey Pederson recorded the assists. Just three minutes later, it was Jenkins' turn to score. Alvarado set up the play with a steal and pass to Jenkins, who one-timed a shot past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.

UCLA wasted no time in getting on the board after halftime. Not even a minute into the second half, MacKenzie Cerda sent a cross into the box to Sunny Dunphy, who redirected it back to Alvarado at the penalty spot with space. Alvarado sent the ball into the right corner for the goal.

The Bruins put Beijing Normal through the wringer during a five-minute onslaught that began in the 52nd minute. UCLA scored two of its three goals on set pieces during that span, with Chloe Hemingway netting the first at 51:13 off a header from a corner kick. Kaskie sent the corner into the box, and Hernandez headed it back to Hemingway, who headed it into the right corner for her first goal as a Bruin. Hernandez scored her first goal at 52:51, shooting from center after a pass from Rodriguez, and the Spanish forward added her second score at 56:35 on a header off a Kaskie corner kick. Rodriguez finished up the scoring at the 64:26 mark with a shot from the top of the box after a Kaskie pass.

UCLA goalkeeper Siri Ervik earned the shutout and saw just three shots come her way, none on goal. The Bruins outshot Beijing Normal, 17-3.

Up next for UCLA is a tough weekend swing that begins with a Friday road match at No. 8 Texas A&M and concludes with a Sunday home match against No. 7 Florida in the Bruins' home opener.
