September 01, 2016 | Cross Country
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA cross country team will once again open the season under the lights as the Bruins will compete in the annual Nature's Bakery Twilight Classic. The meet will be held on Friday, Sept. 2 at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks, Nev.
"I am excited to start the season once again up in Reno," UCLA cross country coach Forest Braden said. "They put on a great meet and it is just fun to compete again. We are putting a really good men's and women's team on the line and I expect the team to be aggressive and take care of business on Friday."ย
The women's competition will start things off at 8:40 p.m. in a 4K race while the men will follow in a 5K at 9:20 p.m.
"It is always nice to put a new team out there and see where we are at," Braden added. "This race will give us an indication of our depth and will give our athletes another chance to compete."ย
The men's team is coming off a 14th place showing at the 2015 National Championships and has placed in the top-20 nationally in three of the last four seasons. The Bruins return four harriers with national meet experience in Austin O'Neil, Myles Smith, Ferdinand Edman and Jonah Diaz.
On the women's side, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Carolina Johnson returns for her sophomore season. She individually qualified for the national meet and earned USTFCCCA all-region accolades by placing ninth overall.
On top of Johnson the Bruins also return four others with top-7 experience, including Emily Scharmann. Scharmann had a breakout track season that saw the Trabuco Canyon native shatter the school record in the steeple en route to a NCAA regional appearance.
The Bruins will continue to train in Mammoth and return to the race trail on Sept. 24 at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
