Cross Country Impressive in Season Opener

SPARKS, Nev. – The UCLA cross country team opened the 2016 season under the lights Friday night at the Nature's Bakery Twilight Classic held at Shadow Mountain Park.

The men's squad handled their business in the season opener as the Bruins placed all seven in the top nine. Daniel De La Torre won the competition on the 5K course in a time of 15:55. A pack of Bruins finished 3-7 as Millen Trujillo (16:08), Cole Smith (16:09), Jackson Marshall (16:19), Richard Ho (16:27) and Max Davis (16:28) secured the victory. George Gleason capped off the top-10 showing with a ninth place finish in a time of 16:29.

A pack of Bruins tackled the 4K in the women's competition as Jackie Garner finished 13th with a time of 15:37. Emily Fieberling also finished in a time of 15:37 while Taylor Taite (15:45) and Roni Yamane followed at 15:47.

Maddi Moore crossed the line in 24th with a time of 16:24 while Rebecca Alch was 26th at 16:34. Sweena Mangal finished in 28th with a time of 17:08 while Sarah Riggs rounded out the Bruins with an 18:23.

The Bruins will continue to train in Mammoth and return to the race trail on Sept. 24 at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota.
