January 15, 2017 | Gymnastics

Norman, Okla. - UCLA used strong bars and beam rotations to post a score of 196.825 at Oklahoma on Sunday, over a one-point improvement from the season opener. The No. 2-ranked Sooners won the meet with a national-high score of 198.025.

Redshirt senior Christine Peng-Peng Lee led the Bruins with stellar routines on uneven bars and balance beam. Lee tied for first on uneven bars with a 9.925 and earned a perfect 10 from one of the two beam judges, scoring 9.95. Freshman Madison Kocian rebounded from a tough showing on uneven bars, scoring 9.875 or better on her final three events, including a 9.925 on beam and 9.9 on floor.

UCLA started the meet on uneven bars by scoring 49.35. JaNay Honest started things off with a fantastic leadoff routine, sticking her full-twisting double-back dismount and scoring 9.875. After a 9.825 from Sonya Meraz and a 9.8 from Stella Savvidou, Kyla Ross and Lee went back-to-back with 9.925s. Oklahoma, meanwhile, scored 49.425 on vault to take a slight lead.

Two Bruins made their season debuts on vault in rotation two, with Napualani Hall and Honest scoring a pair of 9.775s. Kocian stuck her vault for a team-high 9.875. Ross had a huge vault with a small hop and scored 9.85. Freshman Gracie Kramer added a big vault as well and scored 9.8 to help contribute to the team's score of 49.075. Oklahoma extended its lead after scoring 49.475 on bars.

The Bruins had four floor routines that scored 9.85 or better in rotation three, but two scores in the 9.4 range dropped the Bruins' overall total to 48.95. Kocian led the Bruins with a 9.9, Hallie Mossett earned a 9.875, and Meraz and Honest each scored 9.85. Hall had a solid routine going but put a hand down on her final tumbling pass, dropping her score to 9.475. Savvidou had a lovely routine but too much power on her tumbling runs, going out of bounds on her final two passes, scoring 9.4. The Sooners went 49.6 on beam thanks to three scores of 9.925 or better.

UCLA nearly matched Oklahoma's total on beam, scoring a season-high 49.45 in the final rotation with six hit routines. Lee earned a 10 from one of the judges and scored 9.95 overall. Kocian and Katelyn Ohashi each scored 9.925, and Ross and Mikaela Gerber each contributed 9.825s.

The Bruins will be off next week and return to action on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Oregon State.
