Ball Named UCLA's Student-Athlete of the Week
January 24, 2017 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Freshman guard Lonzo Ball of the men's basketball team has been voted the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Ball averaged 17.0 points, 10.0 assists and 6.5 rebounds in the Bruins' two games last week, shooting 65.0 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from beyond the three-point arc. He had 10 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds in the team's 102-80 win over Arizona. Two days later, Ball scored a career-high 24 points and added eight assists and six rebounds in a loss to No. 14 Arizona.
Ball, a 6-foot-6 guard from Chino Hills, Calif., registered 20 assists and just five turnovers through the Bruins' two games last week. He leads all Pac-12 players in total assists (172) and assists per game (8.2). Ball stands just seven assists shy of tying UCLA's single-season freshman assists record of 179, set by Pooh Richardson in 1985-86.
The weekly award is chosen by fans on Twitter via @UCLAAthletics. The other nominees for this week's award included Jake Arnitz (men's volleyball), Monique Billings (women's basketball) and Gage Brymer (men's tennis).
