Bruins Ranked No. 8 in ITA Rankings
January 04, 2017 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – The UCLA men's tennis team checks in at eighth in the first edition of the 2017 Oracle/ITA Men's National Team Rankings, posted January 4. In the men's singles rankings, three Bruins appear in the top 100. No Bruin doubles teams are currently ranked.    Â
Senior Gage Brymer sits just outside the top 10, ranked No. 11. This is the Bruins' best national ranking of his career. Only one Pac-12 player is ranked higher than Brymer—Stanford's Tom Fawcett at No. 8. Earning his first career ranking, sophomore Maxime Cressy checks in at No. 87, while senior Joseph Di Giulio is ranked No. 90.Â
For the third straight year, a Bruin was the ITA Southwest Regional singles champion. Following in the footsteps of Martin Redlicki and former Bruin Mackenzie McDonald, Brymer claimed this year's title with a straight-set win over USC's Thibault Forget.Â
Cressy made an impressive run at the 60th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships back in October. His hot streak came to an end in the semis when he fell to third-seeded Nick Crystal of USC. En route to the semis, Cressy did not drop a single set throughout three matches. The Bruin also ousted top-seeded Logan Smith (USC) in the round of 16.
Earlier in October, Cressy teamed with Daniel Gealer to take home the doubles title in the Flight-A Draw at the UCSB Classic. Cressy also appeared in the Flight-A singles final, falling to hometown favorite Morgan Mays of UCSB.  In the Flight-B consolation singles final, Gealer was able to take home the hardware in impressive fashion, downing Manuel De Luis Lamales of St. Mary's in straight sets.
In November, Di Giulio captured the title at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Portland's Mathieu Garcia in the final.Â
The Bruins return to action January 13-16 for the Sherwood Collegiate Cup and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. The squad then kicks off dual match play against Grand Canyon University on Wednesday, January 18 at 2 p.m. PT.  Â
