Bruins Beat Beavers, 4-1, to Remain Undefeated

October 01, 2017 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Top-ranked UCLA scored three first-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Oregon State. Junior forward Hailie Mace contributed to all three of the goals in the first half, scoring the first two and assisting Ashley Sanchez on the third.

Mace put UCLA (10-0-1, 3-0-0) on the board early, just 1:47 into the game. Anika Rodriguez launched a free kick into the box, finding Gabrielle Matulich on the left side. Matulich sent a cross over to Mace in front of the goal, and Mace finished it from close range.

Five minutes later, Mace made it 2-0 UCLA with her second goal of the contest. Sanchez set up the play, splitting defenders and sending a through ball to Mace, who slotted it past OSU goalkeeper Bella Geist into the right corner.

Mace returned the favor in the 40th minute, sending Sanchez a through ball following a long pass from Kaiya McCullough. Sanchez shot past the goalkeeper from about 12 yards out for her third goal of the year.

Oregon State (3-6-2, 0-3-0) got one back in the 76th minute, breaking the Bruins' shutout aspirations, as Taylor Lemmond went top shelf with to beat UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah after a through ball from Emma Jones. But the Bruins got their three-goal lead back with just four seconds left when Claire Winter's cross found Gabrielle Matulich on the right side. Matulich shot far post to score her second goal of the season.

"We got what we wanted out of today," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "We needed to get players in different spots to see if they could fill certain roles for us. Playing different formations, we need to have options and know our options. We saw some good things today, although I don't love that we gave up a goal."

The Bruins outshot the Beavers, 15-5, and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Micah and Geist each finished with two saves.

UCLA begins a road series against the Arizona schools, first taking on Arizona State on Thursday, Oct. 5.
