
UCLA Sends Eight to ITA Southwest Regionals

LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA women's tennis team will be well represented at the Barnes Tennis Center when the ITA Southwest Regionals begin on the campus of the University of San Diego Thursday. Eight Bruins in all will comprise the UCLA group in the singles tournament, while the same eight will also make up four doubles teams.
Bruins will begin play at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, as four players are among those scheduled to open the tournament. Senior Kristin Wiley will have some work to do to reach the Round of 64, as she will take on Berta Acero from San Diego State in the opening round. Juniors Gabby Andrews and Alaina Miller, as well as senior Terri Fleming, will make their first appearances in the Round of 64 after earning first-round byes. Andrews will square off with Abbie Mulbarger of the Aztecs, who also earned a bye through the Round of 128. Miller, meanwhile, finds herself locked into a battle with top-seeded Ashley Lahey of Pepperdine. Fleming, who is the No. 8 seed in the field, will take on Long Beach State's Natalia Munoz.
Freshman Sophie Bendetti will face a conference rival in her first match, a 10:00 a.m. Round of 128 date with Angela Kulikov of USC. Redshirt sophomore and No. 7 seed Jada Hart will play Karla Portalatin of Cal State Fullerton at 11:30 a.m., while freshman Abi Altick will take on host USD's Colomba DiFilippo at the same time.
Junior Ayan Broomfield will complete the Round of 64 Bruin participants when she faces the winner of Camila Tumosa of Loyola Marymount and Amanda Atanasson of UC Santa Barbara at 12:00 p.m.
Each of the Bruin doubles tandems will begin play Friday at 9:00 a.m. The team of Bendetti-Wiley will take on Veronica Miroshichenko and Eva Marie Voracek of LMU, the third-seeded duo of Broomfield-Fleming will play the winner of a UCSB-Hawai'i match, eighth-seeded Altick-Miller takes on Sophie Chow and Maria Torres of USD and second-seeded Andrews and Hart will face a team from either CSUN or Hawai'i.
