Golden Goal Lifts UCLA over No. 22 Washington

October 08, 2017 | Men's Soccer

SEATTLEMatthew Powell scored his first goal of the season in the 94th minute as the UCLA men's soccer team upset No. 22 Washington, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday from Husky Soccer Stadium. The win snaps Washington's six-match winning streak and improves UCLA's record to 2-2 in Pac-12 play.

"Tonight was a very hard fought game," said head coach Jorge Salcedo. "I thought the guys earned the victory and deserved the three points. This weekend was important for us to get the two road wins and we did just that."

Kevin Silva tallied his second consecutive shutout and third of the season as he registered six saves against a Huskies offense that came into the match ranked seventh in the country in scoring offense.

In the fourth minute of overtime UCLA earned a corner kick on the left side of the field. Milan Iloski would serve a perfect ball into the box that found Powell who drove a strong, low header towards the near post for the game-winning goal.

The Bruins held a 7-5 lead in shots during the second period but were unable to find the back of the net in regulation. Anderson Asiedu and Christian Chavez each challenged the keeper over a two-minute stretch in the middle of the period but both shots were saved. Late in regulation, Silva would come up big making a pair of stops to force extra time.

The match was scoreless after the first half as UCLA trailed only slightly in shots 5-4 but Washington held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bruins weathered an early attack from the Huskies with Silva making three saves, but found some offense later in the period. Brian Iloski's through ball was just out of reach of a streaking Santiago Herrera in the 32nd minute, followed by Eric Iloski's long range shot being saved in the 39th minute. In the final seconds of the period, Kike Poleo's pass would get behind the UW backline but was unable to connect with Herrera.

Washington (9-3-0) suffered its first loss in Pac-12 play after winning its first two matches by a combined score of 5-1. UCLA outshot the high-powered UW offense, 13-10, in the match and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bruins return to Westwood in exactly one week as they host Pac-12 opponent San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. PT. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
