Five Bruins Receive Pac-12 All-Academic Honors

SAN FRANCISCO – Five UCLA men's soccer players earned Pac-12 All-Academic team honors, led by Blayne Martinez and Kike Poleo each being named to the second team, announced the conference office on Thursday.
Martinez receives his second Pac-12 All-Academic second team award, while Poleo registers his first. Brian Iloski earned his second-straight honorable mention accolade, while Christian Chavez and Erik Holt also were named honorable mention.
Martinez, a redshirt sophomore, played in all 18 games this year, making six starts, and holds a 3.62 GPA in political science. He ended the season with five points on two goals and an assist. Martinez scored the first goal of the season in a 5-3 win at San Francisco on Aug. 26 and scored the lone goal at San Diego on Oct. 22. He also assisted on an Alex Knox goal in a 5-0 win over Oregon State.
Poleo, a junior from Miami, Fla., played in 12 games, making two starts, and is majoring in Business Economics with a 3.61 GPA. He earned a started in the home opener against UNLV that resulted in a 1-0 win and also in the penultimate game of the season at California in a 3-2 loss. Poleo ended the season with six shots on goal.
Iloski and Holt were both named to the All-Pac-12 first team, while Chavez played in 17 games, making 15 starts and tallied one assist.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and appear in at least 50 percent of their team's games.
