LOS ANGELES, Calif. – No. 8/7 UCLA (0-0) opens the 2017-18 season when it hosts San Jose State (0-0) on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:05 p.m. PT in legendary Pauley Pavilion. Then the Bruins host Presbyterian College on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 2:05 p.m. PT in Pauley Pavilion. The game on Friday is First Responders and Veterans Night. Veterans receive free admission with valid military ID at the door. First responders receive free admission for themselves and family members with proof of service (badge, dressed in uniform, any other proof). The game on Sunday vs. Presbyterian is our annual Dads & Daughters Day!

2017-18 PREVIEW
The UCLA Bruins return four starters for the 2017-18 season in senior point guard Jordin Canada, senior guard Kelli Hayes, junior guard Kennedy Burke and senior forward Monique Billings. The Bruins also return four players from last year's squad that were injured and missed most or all of the season in redshirt junior forward Lajahna Drummer, redshirt junior guard Chrissy Baird, redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro and sophomore Ally Rosenblum). Additionally, the Bruins return the services of junior forward Ashley Hearn and added the sixth-ranked recruiting class by espnW, which included freshman guards Chantel Horvat and Kayla Owens, freshman fowards Lauryn Miller and Michaela Onyenwere and junior guard Japreece Dean (transfer from Texas Tech). In all, UCLA returns 82% of its blocks from last year, 79% of assists, 74% of steals, 73% of scoring and 69% of rebounding. UCLA will begin the 2017-18 season ranked in the top 10 for the second straight year. The Bruins are preseason ranked No. 8 in the Associated Press poll and No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bruins were also picked to win the Pac-12 by both the league coaches and the league media and Canada and Billings were both selected to the 5-woman Preseason All-Pac-12 Team by the league's media.

UCLA has won its last two season openers to improve to 21-18 all-time.

DOMINIQUE WILLIAMS' NEW ROLE
Guard Dominique Williams has medically retired from the sport and will serve as an undergraduate assistant coach in 2017-18.

EXHIBITION RECAP
UCLA 87, Vanguard 40 (Nov. 5)
The No. 8/7 UCLA women's basketball team registered a victory in its lone exhibition contest of 2017-18, defeating NAIA opponent Vanguard at Pauley Pavilion, 87-40. All 10 Bruins scored on the afternoon, with senior Monique Billings and freshman Michaela Onyenwere tying for the team lead with 14 points. Billings played just 17 minutes. Newcomer Chantel Horvat recorded a double-double in the win, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Freshman Lauryn Miller added 12 points as true freshmen accounted for 42 in all. Onyenwere also pulled down nine rebounds and matched senior Jordin Canada with five steals. Canada put in a well-rounded effort, totaling eight points, four rebounds, six assists and her five takeaways in 21 minutes.
  
2016-17 TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • UCLA has now been ranked for 36 consecutive weeks in the AP Top 25 poll, the third-longest streak (50 from 1976-80 is #1) in UCLA history.
  • UCLA has now been ranked for 33 consecutive weeks in the USA Today Coaches Poll, the longest streak in UCLA history (32 from 1999-2000).
  • UCLA's highest ranking of 7th in the USA Today Coaches Poll in 2016-17 was the highest since 1999 (just equaled that in the preseason poll of 2017-18).
  • UCLA's final ranking of 13th in the USA Today Coaches Poll in 2016-17 was the highest final poll ranking in school history (the poll has been around since 1985-86).
  • UCLA's win at Stanford in 2016-17 was the first since 1999.
  • UCLA's advancement to the Sweet Sixteen in 2015-16 was the first since 1999 and the Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2016-17 made it back-to-back appearances for the first time in school history.

  • At 16-0, UCLA had the best home record in school history in a single season (13-0 previous best), and recorded just the fourth undefeated home season all-time at UCLA and the first since 1977-78.
2016-17 PLAYER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • For just the second season in school history, UCLA had three 1,000-point scorers (Monique Billings, Kari Korver, Jordin Canada) on the same team (2005-06: Nikki Blue, Noelle Quinn, Lisa Willis).
  • Monique Billings' 25 rebounds vs. Washington State tied for the most in school history (Denise Curry and Natalie Williams) and were a Pauley Pavilion record.
  • Jordin Canada's 16 assists vs. Boise State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament tied UCLA's single-game record and tied for 5th all-time in NCAA early round games.
  • Jordin Canada is just the sixth Bruin all-time to record 100 or more assists in three straight seasons.
  • Monique Billings tied the UCLA single-season record for free throws made (154, Maylana Martin 1998-99) and set the record for attempts (242).
  • Jordin Canada set the UCLA single-season assists average at 7.12 assists per game (old record was 6.67 apg).
  • Monique Billings set the UCLA single-season record for blocks with 66 (old record was 61, Corinne Costa, 2014-15).
  • Monique Billings was 2nd on UCLA's single-season list in rebounds (357) which was just three shy of tying the UCLA record (Denise Curry, 360, 1980-81).
  • Jordin Canada set the UCLA single-season record for assists with 242 (old record was 240, Mary Hegarty, 1980-81).
  • Kari Korver ended her career with 78 consecutive starts dating back to the 2014-15 season.
  • Jordin Canada led the Pac-12 in assists (7.1 apg, ranked 9th nationally), assist/turnover ratio (2.66, ranks 15th nationally) and in steals (2.5 spg, ranks 43rd nationally).
  • Monique Billings was second in the Pac-12 in double-doubles with 19 which ranked 7th nationally and 2nd all-time at UCLA (one shy of tying the all-time record of 20).
  • Monique Billings became just the second player at UCLA in the last 22 years and the 12th in UCLA history to average double-figure rebounds (10.5 rpg).
  • Kari Korver tied for the UCLA career record in three-point field goals made with 256 (Lisa Willis, 2003-06) and was second in three-pointers attempted with 691 (Lisa Willis, 710, 2003-06). She also finished 2nd in career free throw percentage at 81.6%, just behind Denise Curry at 81.8% (1978-81).
SAN JOSE STATE IN EXHIBITION
The Spartans cruised to an 83-72 exhibition game victory over Stanislaus State on Nov. 5 in The Event Center. Eleven of the 13 Spartans to see action logged double-digit minutes led by Mikaylah Wilson (Fr., F, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) who played 22. Four Spartans scored in double digits led by senior Myzhanique Ladd's (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash.) 12 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, had five assists and five steals in 20 minutes of work. Fieme'a Hafoka (So., G, Kihei, Maui) scored 11 points as did Wilson and Taylor Turney (So., PG, Henderson, Nev.) added 10 points and five assists.

SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN
Senior point guard Cortney Storey was named to the Big South Preseason First Team by the league's coaches, becoming the first Blue Hose player named to the preseason team since Karlee Taylor in 2013-14. She enters the season with 875 career points, 346 career assists and 161 career steals. Last year, she finished with a Division I era record 12.6 points per game (391 points), 137 assists and 65 steals. This is the third straight year the Blue Hose have opened their season on the road out west, having faced Gonzaga in 2016-17 and Colorado in 2015-16. PC will open its season at San Diego State on Nov. 10. The Blue Hose brought in eight newcomers this season, which includes seven freshmen, as they return three starters from last year's team that went 13-18.
