LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked Bruins completed a 5-0 opening weekend on Sunday, defeating #22 Notre Dame 8-0 in five innings at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament at Easton Stadium. Redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia struck out six in a two-hit gem, while sophomore Paige Halstead went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in.
ย
The Bruins recorded 13 hits from eight different players, as Garcia, sophomores Zoe Shaw and Brianna Tautalafua and freshman Bubba Nickles also had two-hit games.
ย
Garcia retired the first 10 batters of the game before surrendering back-to-back singles. However, those two would be the only Irish (3-2) to reach base. Garcia fanned at least one in every inning and two in the third, also retiring the side in order in the fifth to improve to 2-0 on the season.
ย
UCLA got started early with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. Nickles singled into left field, Garcia doubled to left-center and Halstead singled to left to plate the game's first run.
ย
The Bruins added another in the third. Nickles again started the rally, leading off the inning with a single up the middle. After advancing to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Garcia sacrifice, Halstead drove in her second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left-center to make it 2-0.
ย
UCLA broke it open with four in the fourth. Junior Madeline Jelenicki led off with a single in the 5-6 hole and was pinch-run for by sophomore Imani Johnson, who stole second. One out later, Shaw singled up the middle to drive in the Bruins' third run. A walk to senior Delaney Spaulding and a bunt single for junior Kylee Perez loaded the bases for Nickles, who sent a shot to left-center for an out, but it was enough to plate Shaw to make it 4-0. A Garcia single to right brought in Spaulding for UCLA's fifth run, which was followed by a Halstead single to right to bring in Perez to make it 6-0.
ย
Spaulding brought an end to the morning's festivities in the fifth with another two-out rally. Tautalafua singled to left and was pinch-run for by sophomore Stevie Wisz. A walk to Shaw put two on for Spaulding, who tripled to right to end the ballgame.
