Salt Lake City, Utah - Freshman Kyla Ross scored her second perfect 10 of the season on uneven bars, but the fourth-ranked Bruins were edged out by fifth-ranked Utah, 197.875-197.500.
Ross, a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, has scored two 10s and a 9.975 on uneven bars in her last four meets. Her score, along with Stella Savvidou's career-high 9.9 and JaNay Honest's season-high 9.875, helped the Bruins record 49.4 on the event. UCLA's score matched Utah's first-rotation score on vault, and the two teams went into rotation two in a dead heat.
Utah pulled ahead by two-tenths in the second rotation after scoring 49.4 on bars while the Bruins scored 49.2 on vault. Ross once again led the Bruins, scoring 9.875. Honest and Angi Cipra each added 9.85s.
The Bruins had a fall in rotation three but still scored 49.35 on the strength of 9.925 scores from Madison Kocian and Hallie Mossett. The 9.925 was a season-high for Mossett, and the 9.925 was Kocian's fifth 9.9+ score in a row on floor.
With the Bruins down 148.200-147.950 heading into the final rotation, the Bruins fed off the heavily pro-Utah crowd and fired off a season-best 49.55 on balance beam. Kocian received a perfect 10 from one judge and a 9.9 from the other for a new career-best of 9.95. Katelyn Ohashi matched her score with a 9.95, hitting her backhandspring/backhandspring/full-twisting layout. Mossett earned a new career-high with a 9.9, and Sonya Meraz hit a season-best 9.875 in the leadoff position. Ross also earned 9.875. However, Utah had five scores of 9.9 or better, including three 9.95s in a row, to take the meet with a 49.675 on floor exercise.
