Bruins Bested by Golden Bears at ITA Indoors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. โ The No. 7 UCLA men's tennis team completed its three-day trip to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Sunday with a hard-fought loss to the No. 4 California Golden Bears in the consolation round, 4-3. The match marked the Bruins' third against a top-10 opponent in as many days.
In doubles, the Golden Bear team of J.T. Nishimura and Bjorn Hoffmann recorded a 6-1 win over UCLA's Austin Rapp and Ben Goldberg on Court 3, 6-1. The Bruins' No. 16 pair of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu evened the score with their first win of the ITA Indoors, a 6-3 decision over Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith on Court 1. Court 2 then became the site of the clinching point, which was taken by Cal's team of Florian Laket and Connor Heap when it held off Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy, 6-4.
Singles was a back-and-forth affair, as Logan Staggs posted a straight-set (6-1, 6-2) win over the Golden Bears' Connor Heap on Court 5 to quickly knot the match. No. 73 Redlicki then dropped his first singles match of the dual-match year, as No. 11 Florian Lakat earned a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 1. No. 19 Brymer, in another matchup of ranked opponents, defeated No. 27 Goransson after a tightly-contested second set, 6-1, 7-5.
Bjorn Hoffmann put the Bruins on the brink of elimination with his three-set defeat of Evan Zhu on Court 3 (4-6, 6-1, 6-4). Then, down 5-6 to Cal's Dominic Barretto in the third set, No. 112 Cressy rallied to force a tiebreaker, which he ultimately captured (2-6, 6-3, 7-6[3]) to ensure the match would go the distance.
The final matchup between UCLA's Austin Rapp and Cal's Nishimura also fittingly went the full three sets, as the Golden Bear junior pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory to hold off the repeatedly hard-charging Bruins.
UCLA leaves Charlottesville with a win over No. 9 USC and losses to No. 1 Virginia and No. 4 California. Next up for the Bruins is another non-conference date with a Bay Area foe, when the No. 20 Stanford Cardinal visit the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts on Saturday, Feb. 25. Play will begin at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
