February 21, 2017 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA senior Bryce Alford of the men's basketball team has been voted the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Alford scored 26 points and had six assists with no turnovers to lead the Bruins past crosstown rival USC, 102-70, before a sellout crowd in Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 18. He shot 8 for 15 from the field and made 5 of 9 shots from three-point range as UCLA won its fifth consecutive game.
In addition, Alford climbed to the No. 7 slot on UCLA's career scoring list (1,802) and now stands just 13 points shy of the No. 6 spot (Ed O'Bannon, 1,815 points).
With five three-pointers in the win over USC, Alford pushed his season total to 88 three-point field goals, which is just five away from tying his single-season school record of 93 that he established in 2014-15. Alford has made 301 career three-pointers, 16 shy of Jason Kapono's career record (317).
The UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week award is chosen by fans on Twitter via @UCLAAthletics. Three other nominees this week included Monique Billings (women's basketball), Jake Bird (baseball) and Rachel Garcia (softball).
Ranked No. 5 in both major national polls, UCLA (24-3, 11-3 Pac-12) returns to action at Arizona State (13-15, 6-9 Pac-12) this Thursday evening. Game time at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena is 6 pm PT (7 pm MT). UCLA's game will be nationally televised on ESPN2. Arizona operates in the Mountain Time Zone until Sunday, March 8.
