Bruins Go the Distance in 4-3 Win Over Georgia

February 04, 2017 | Men's Tennis

GAINESVILLE โ€“ The No. 6 UCLA Bruins defeated the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs Saturday, 4-3, as part of the Pac-12/SEC Showdown at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla. With the win the Bruins have defeated Georgia in consecutive years by identical 4-3 scores.

The doubles team of Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp gave UCLA an early edge, as it defeated Georgia's Wayne Montgomery and Nathan Ponwith on Court 2, 6-2. The Bulldogs quickly evened the score on Court 3, where Walker Duncan and Paul Oosterbaan held off the Bruin duo of Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy, 6-4. That left it to Court 1 and UCLA's team of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu, which was able to clinch the doubles point for the second consecutive match, as it took down Georgia's No. 54 duo Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb after a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3).

In singles play, Logan Staggs defeated Zielinski in straight sets, 6-2,6-3, to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage. The Bulldogs would not go down easily, though, as No. 124 Nathan Ponwith dispatched the Bruins' Evan Zhu, 6-4, 6-3, while Georgia's No. 79 Duncan handled Rapp, 6-4, 6-4.

With the teams knotted at two apiece, No. 90 Di Giulio took down Oosterbaan on Court 4 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. No. 22 Montgomery defeated No. 11 Brymer on Court 1, 7-5, 6-3, to put all eyes on Court 2, where the Bruins' Redlicki and the Bulldogs Emil Reinberg battled to the deciding point. In the end, it was the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, Redlicki, who secured the point and the match for the Bruins.

In the teams' previous match, the Bruins defeated the Bulldogs at the 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va, 4-3 (Feb. 12). UCLA also hosted Georgia at last season's Pac-12/SEC Challenge, a match that the Bruins won, 6-1 (Jan. 30).

The Bruins will face another test Sunday, when it takes on No. 11 Florida in the second day of action at the Pac-12/SEC Showdown. Play will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville, Fla.
