Pair of Perfect 10s Lead UCLA to Senior Day Win
March 12, 2017 | Gymnastics
UCLA scored two perfect 10s - one each on uneven bars and balance beam - en route to scoring its second-highest team total of the season in a 197.800-195.400 win over North Carolina in front of 8,540 fans in Pauley Pavilion.
Senior Christine Peng-Peng Lee scored her second 10 of the year on uneven bars, and sophomore Katelyn Ohashi scored her second consecutive 10 on balance beam. The two 10.0s give UCLA a total of eight perfect 10s scored by the Bruins this season.
UCLA (9-2) had 12 scores of 9.9 or higher, including five on floor exercise alone. The Bruins hit a season-best on floor with a 49.65, led by senior Hallie Mossett's 9.975 and redshirt freshman Macy Toronjo's career-high 9.95. Both routines earned a perfect 10 from one judge.
The Bruins also had strong marks on bars (49.45) and beam, not just from their perfect 10 scorers but across the board. Kyla Ross earned a 9.95 on bars, and Stella Savvidou tied her career-high with a 9.9. On balance beam, Lee scored 9.925, and Mossett tied her career-best with a 9.9.
UCLA scored 49.275 on vault and featured two 10.0 start-value vaults for the first time this year. Gracie Gracie Kramer and Napualani Hall each hit their Yurchenko 1.5 vaults for scores of 9.875 and 9.85, respectively. But it was Madison Preston's Yurchenko full that won the meet with a 9.9.
UCLA honored its six seniors - team manager Alex Waller, volunteer assistant coach Jordyn Wieber and senior competitors Angi Cipra, Mikaela Gerber, Lee and Mossett - at the conclusion of the meet.
"I thought the meet was amazing," said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. "It was led by the energy of our seniors. It's really important to have leadership like that when you go into your last home meet, where you're going to have a lot of fun but still be focused and do your job. To have people who don't get so caught up or tight because it's their last meet in Pauley and don't make it bigger than it is but still honor it, we had six people like that on the floor today."
The Bruins will head to Stanford next week to defend their Pac-12 title at the conference championships on Saturday, Mar. 18. The Bruins will be the top seed at the Championships and compete in the evening session at 6:00 pm.
