March 23, 2017 | Gymnastics
UCLA's Christine Peng-Peng Lee has been selected as one of seven finalists for the AAI Award, which is presented to the most outstanding senior female gymnast in the country.
Lee joins Michigan's Nicole Artz, Oklahoma's Chayse Capps, LSU's Ashleigh Gnat, Oregon State's Madeline Gardiner and Kaytianna McMillan and Utah's Baely Rowe as finalists for the prestigious award, which will be announced at the NCAA Championship banquet in April. In its history, UCLA has had four winners โ Vanessa Zamarripa in 2013, Jamie Dantzscher in 2004, Mohini Bhardwaj in 2001 and Donna Kemp in 1984.
Lee has had a standout 2017 season, being named UCLA's first-ever Pac-12 Specialist of the Year. She has scored two perfect 10s on uneven bars, along with three other scores of 9.95 or higher. She has six scores of 9.9 or better on beam, including a 9.975. Against Cal on Mar. 5, she scored 9.975 on both bars and beam. Lee leads the Bruin team in uneven bars victories with seven and ranks second on the team with seven 9.95+ scores and 14 9.9+ scores despite competing on just two events. She is nationally-ranked in the Top 20 on uneven bars (No. 3) and balance beam (No. 17). The five-time All-American has also been a standout in the classroom, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honors in 2015 and 2016.
