UCLA Offense Surges Past Cal, 20-0

LOS ANGELES โ Sean Bouchard recorded five RBIs and hit a three-run home run, while Jon Olsen threw 7.0 shutout innings as the UCLA baseball team earned a Pac-12 series sweep on Sunday over California, 20-0, from Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Bruins have extended their winning streak to four games with the victory.
The Bruins scored at least one run in the first six innings of the game, including a seven-run eighth inning and a six-run fifth inning, to claim its first conference sweep since taking three from Oregon last season at home. The 20 runs are the most in a single game for UCLA since scoring 20 against Oral Roberts on March 19, 2010. The UCLA bats totaled 38 runs over the three-game series.
UCLA jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Bouchard hit a sacrifice fly in the in the first inning, followed by three runs in the second inning highlighted by a RBI-single by Brett Stephens.
The Bruins added one run in both the third and fourth innings before scoring six runs in the fifth inning. Chase Strumpf and Stephens each recorded RBI-singles before Sean Bouchard hit a three-run home run to left-center field to make the score 12-0.
UCLA capitalized on a pair of California errors to score seven runs in the eighth inning. After a dropped fly ball brought home two runs, Jeremy Ydens hit a two-run single, followed one batter later by Jake Hirabayashi driving home Nick Kern with a single to right field. Daniel Rosica and Zander Clarke capped off the inning with back-to-back RBI-singles for the final runs of the game.
Olsen (1-1) earned his first win of the season going seven scoreless innings allowing just three hits with five strikeouts. The Bruins pick up their second shutout of the season in the win. Cal's Tanner Dodson (1-5) suffered the loss tossing 4.1 innings allowing 11 runs, seven earned, on eight hits with six walks.
The Bruins finish the day with 20 runs on 17 hits with no errors, while the Golden Bears were held scoreless with three hits and seven errors.
UCLA will close an eight-game homestand on Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium when it hosts fifth-ranked Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
