UCLA Takes Series Opener at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. โ Griffin Canning threw 7.1 innings and totaled nine strikeouts, while Ryan Kreidler went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs as the UCLA baseball team won the series opener at Arizona State, 9-3, on Friday from Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Bruins have now won six consecutive games including five during Pac-12 play.
Leading by just one run heading into the ninth inning, UCLA put up five runs to take a 9-3 advantage. The Bruins loaded the bases and Michael Toglia drew a bases loaded walk for the first run of the frame. Chase Strumpf followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and Ryan Kreidler drove in his second run of the game with a single down the left-field line. Brett Stephens capped off the inning with a two-run single through the right side of the infield for the final runs of the game.
UCLA grabbed an early lead with three runs in the second inning as Strumpf and Kreidler hit back-to-back RBI-singles through the left side of the infield followed by Daniel Amaral drawing a bases loaded walk.
Arizona State scored its first run in the third inning but the Bruins pushed it back to a three-run advantage in the top of the fourth inning as Amaral drove in his second run of the game with a single to plate Daniel Rosica from second base.
The Sun Devils cut the UCLA lead to just one run as Hunter Bishop singled in a runner in the fifth inning and Carter Aldrete hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the eighth inning. ASU looked to tie the game with two outs in the eighth inning but Rosica collected a wild pitch and threw behind the runner at second base for the final out.
Canning (2-1) earned his second straight win tossing 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts. ASU's Eli Lingos suffered the loss throwing 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits and five walks.
UCLA returns to the field on Saturday for game two of the three-game weekend series at Arizona State with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (PT)
